Advanced BMR Guide

1. The Science Behind BMR

BMR represents about 60-75% of your daily calorie burn. It’s the energy your vital organs (heart, lungs, kidneys, brain) need to stay alive. Our calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, currently the gold standard in clinical nutrition.

2. BMR vs. RMR: What’s the difference?

While often used interchangeably, BMR is measured under strict restrictive conditions, while RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is a more realistic estimation of calories burned during low-effort daily life.

Key Factors Influencing BMR:

Muscle Mass Muscles are metabolically active; the more you have, the higher your BMR.
Thyroid Function Hormones regulate metabolism speed. Thyroid issues can lower BMR.

3. Frequently Asked Questions (Extended)

Q: Why is my BMR lower than someone of the same weight?
A: Body composition matters. If you have a higher body fat percentage and lower muscle mass than the other person, your BMR will be lower.

Q: Does "Starvation Mode" exist?
A: If you eat too far below your BMR for long periods, your body may lower its metabolic rate to conserve energy, making weight loss harder.

Q: Does climate affect BMR?
A: Yes, very cold or very hot environments can slightly increase BMR as the body works harder to maintain its core temperature.
